Total Lunar Eclipse over Hong Kong

1/2/2018

Yesterday, Jan. 31st, the full Moon passed directly through the shadow of Earth, producing a total lunar eclipse. The Moon turned red rather than vanishing in the dark, as the red is the almost only visible light refracted through the earth's atmosphere. The same reason that the sunrise and sunset look red.

The photo below was taken in Fotan, Hong Kong. You can see a typical Hong Kong residential highrise (Palazzo 御龍山) in the foreground.

This shot was taken with the same equipment of my event photography: Nikon D750, 24-70mm f/2.8G lens, on a Manfrotto tripod.

I love how the red moon contrasts with the city skyline.
